What Are We Owed?
“You Owe Me.”
We all grew up hearing this phrase at least once.
We’ve all probably said this phrase at least once in our lifetime.
I’ve said this phrase to folks when I’ve done for them what would be considered a favor.
This phrase came back into my life this week based on a conversation I had with a colleague about the expectations folks have in life based on what they put in to to something or based on the favors they believe they are doing for others.
But, really what are we owed? Nothing.
If we decide to do things for the mere fact that someone or something will owe us, then we have already lost.
Nothing in this life is owed to us. We choose to do things and we should choose to do them for ourselves because what is owed is not guaranteed. It is not a given. It should not be a given.
These days I really try to do things just to do them for myself not for someone else or what favors it may bring my way.
I feel better about the choices I make this way.
I look forward to the reward my choices bring just for me, not anyone else.
