Choice
So much of our lives are based on choice.
The choices we make based on the options we are faced with daily.
The choice we make in how we chose to show up in response to what sometimes happens in our lives, especially that which we have no control over.
The choice to be kind, compassionate, thoughtful, empathetic, and on and on and on.
It’s all choice.
So many of the conversations in my work have always, therefore, centered around the concept of choice.
How a split second decision to respond one way over another can lead to a ripple effect that you may not have even thought of in the moment.
That’s usually what happens.
A choice that brings joy or anger, pain, frustration, sadness.
A momentary choice, often times, made in a silo, having a rippling effect on not only yourself but all those around you.
Often times a choice you wish to take back.
One you wish you had thought more about.
I’ve had a few of those moments in my life.
Moments of utter devastation based on choices I have made, in the ways I have chosen to respond and then sometimes the choices life has made for me.
But, I’ve learned from them all.
For the choices I made I learned some hard and necessary lessons.
For the choices that life made for me I made the choice in how I chose to show up for that moment and beyond.
I sometimes don’t feel as though I have any impact at times with these conversations when I reflect on all the students I’ve spoken to about choice over the years, but then I realize I myself learned the hard way for some of my choices.
We all come to understand the impact of choice as we continue to live, learn, and grow.
I can only hope the same for all the students I’ve ever worked with and maybe, just maybe, a few remembered what I said to them down the road.
